Yuzuru Hanyu series on Wikipedia

Hanyu’s series on English Wikipedia is currently consisting of five individual articles with a sixth about his figure skating legacy still in the making. This is an overview of the existing pages with a short summary of their content.

Main biography

Yuzuru Hanyu (羽生結弦, born December 7, 1994) is a Japanese figure skater and ice show producer. He is a two-time Olympic champion and the first male single skater to complete the Super Slam, having won all major international senior and junior titles in the course of his career. In July 2022, he moved from competitive to professional figure skating, pioneering the concept of solo ice shows at the athletic level of competition programs.

He is regarded as one of the greatest and most complete figure skaters in history for his well-rounded skills, achievements, popularity, and impact on the sport. In March 2011, Hanyu’s hometown of Sendai was hit by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, a disaster that has fundamentally shaped his life and career. Since then, he has participated in multiple charity events, donated money for the reconstruction, and dedicated various exhibition programs to the victims of the disaster. In recognition of his contributions to sports and culture, he was bestowed with the People’s Honour Award in 2018 and received the Kikuchi Kan Prize in 2022 among other accolades. (Full article …)

Olympic seasons

Hanyu has participated at the Winter Olympics three times, winning two gold medals (in 2014 and 2018) and placing fourth in 2022. He is the first Asian in the men’s singles discipline to win the Olympics. In 2018, he also became the first male single skater in 66 years to win two consecutive gold medals since Dick Button (in 1948 and 1952).

In his three Olympic seasons, Hanyu skated to three different short and free skate programs each, with their background and making being broadly covered by the media. In 2013–14, he became the first Asian and second skater across all disciplines to win the Olympics, Worlds, and the Grand Prix Final in the same season, after Russian Alexei Yagudin in 2001–02. In the 2021–22 season, Hanyu won his sixth national title and went for the quadruple Axel jump for the first time, with his attempt at the Beijing Olympics being the closest in competition by any skater up to then. Ice show productions

Hanyu has produced four different ice shows in the course of his career. The first one, titled Continues with Wings, was held in March 2018 in Tokyo, celebrating his back-to-back wins at the 2014 and 2018 Winter Olympics and paying tribute to the skaters who had supported and influenced him.

At Prologue in Winter 2022, he challenged the concept of a solo ice show for the first time, performing at the athletic level of skating competitions. With his second solo show Gift in February 2023, he became the first skater to perform at the Tokyo Dome, breaking the record for the largest figure skating audience with 35,000 spectators. In his latest show Yuzuru Hanyu Notte Stellata, a commemoration event of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami held in March 2023, Hanyu teamed up with three-time Olympic gymnastics champion Kohei Uchimura, fusing the sports of figure skating and artistic gymnastics for the first time.
